     Benson Community Education Email Updates – Be the first to know “what’s what” in Benson Community Education.  Sign up to receive a monthly email with updates of programs, events and classes being offered through Benson Schools and Benson Community Education!  We will be cutting back to 3 newsletter issues each year (spring/summer, fall and winter).       Community Education/District Newsletter and Summer Registration – The Community Education/District Newsletter will not be published this spring/summer.  Information concerning summer rec activities will be posted on the Community Education Facebook page and on the Community Education page on the school district website as information becomes available.  Dates have not been set for all summer rec activities as CDC and state guidelines for these activities are constantly changing.

      Volleyball Camp Grades 3-8 – This camp will focus on the progression of all basic skills in the game of volleyball.  The primary focus being technical development of individual skills.  Time will also be available for team play and game-like situations. This camp is for students in grades 3-8 (fall of 2020) and will run Monday, July 20 – Wednesday, July 22 in the High School and East gyms.  Grade 3 & 4 9:00-10:30 a.m.; grades 5 & 6 10:30 a.m.-noon; grades 7 & 8 1:00-4:00 p.m.  Cost is $26.00 for grades 3-6 and $42 for grades 7-8.  Registration must be done online with credit/debit card.  No phone or email registrations will be taken.

     Advanced Volleyball Skills – Skills addressed will be jump-serving, blocking, and digging as well as additional passing, setting, and hitting opportunities.  This camp is considered an extension of the camp offered the previous days.  Those who sign up should be signed up for the previous camp as a prerequisite.  Campers should be comfortable with an overhand serve.  Camp is for students entering grades 5-8 (fall of 2020).  Camp will meet on Thursday, July 23 from 10:00 a.m.-noon in the High School and East gyms.  Cost is $26.00.  Registration must be done online with credit/debit card.  No phone or email registration will be taken.                                                                                                                    * * * * *                     

     Yunker Volleyball Camp – The Yunker Volleyball Camp has been scheduled for grades 9-12 (fall of 2020.)  This camp will again be led by Champlin Park Head Volleyball Coach John Yunker.  He led his Rebels to a Class AAA state championship in 2018.  “Yunker Camp” as we call it, was HIGHLY received the last 2 years and early registration is recommended due to space limitations.  The camp will run Monday, July 27 from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. and Tuesday, July 28 from 9 a.m.–4 p.m.  The cost is $100.   Registration must be done online with credit/debit card.  No phone or email registration will be taken.                      * * * * *         

     Summer Swimming Lessons – Swim lessons consists of multiple levels of instruction to help swimmers of all ages and abilities develop their swimming and water safety skills.  The levels are designed to give students a positive experience in learning how to swim in a logical progression and how to be safe in, on and around the water.   Swimming lesson registrations are now open.  At this time, all classes will be limited to 5 participants.  Because of this, we ask that you only register for 1 class to allow everyone the opportunity to take part in lessons.  If your child is registered for more than 1 class, you may be contacted to ask which class you would like to cancel.  After we’ve gone through the 1st session and as CDC guidelines change, this may be readdressed for further lessons.  If class sizes increase, we will pull from the waitlist.  All registrations must be done online with a credit card.  No registrations will be taken over the phone.  Sessions will run: June 22-July 3, July 13-July 24 and August 3 – 14.  Cost of lessons will remain at $35.  Private lessons are available (register online for this as well) at a cost of $60.  Registration is done here: https://benson.revtrak.net/RW-Community-Education/

       Swimnastics – This a self-pace course that emphasizes muscle toning through various exercises in the water.  You do not need to know how to swim to join this class.  Classes are held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursday from 12:00-12:45 p.m.  Cost is $3.00 per session (pool passes are not honored for this class.)  No registration is needed just check in with instructor, Jan Baukol, when you arrive.

      Benson Outdoor Pool Dates, Hours & Fees – The Benson Outdoor Swimming Pool will be open Monday, June 22 (barring no mechanical issues with the pool.)  Pool Pass and Punch Tickets can be purchased online through the Community Ed office and are also available at the City Hall (1410 Kansas Ave.) and at the pool.  See the Benson Family Aquatic Center page on Facebook for more information on the Covid-19 plan that will be strictly enforced this season.  Patrons who do not follow social distancing rules or any other rule will be asked to leave.

       First Aid and CPR – We are partnering with the Swift County-Benson Health Services for Heartsaver CPR/AED/First Aid.  This is a classroom, video-based, instructor led course that teaches students critical skills needed to respond to and manage a first aid, choking or sudden cardiac arrest emergency.  Upon successful course completion, you will receive an American Heart Association course completion card that is valid for 2 years.  Cost for a single class (CPR or First Aid) is $30 or both classes for $40.  The book is an additional $10 if you want to purchase it.  Class dates to be determined.  Call Benson Community Education at 320-843-4545 for more information.

      Discovery Kids –Discovery Kids offers extended learning care from 5:30 am-6:30 pm Monday through Friday for children ages 6 weeks through 6th grade.  We are located on the ground level and 1st floor of Benson Elementary (old JH building). Use entrance #33.  We will be moving to our new location at Northside Elementary School in mid-July.  Infants, toddler, pre-school and school-age kids will all be in separate rooms.  Preschool and school-aged children will be bussed by Benson Public Schools to and from Summer Rec activities.  A staff member will drive, or will accompany, students on the bus.  Discovery Kids will provide one meal and two snacks for a child who is in attendance at the time of serving.  We are accepting registrations for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children.  The registration form and handbook are available on the school website.  Discovery Kids direct dial phone number is 842-2723.

      Senior Defensive Driving Classes – Defensive Driving classes are offered to people 55 years of age and over to review and discuss courteous driving and the rules of the road.  If you are 55 years of age and older, you receive 10% off your auto insurance for three years, after completing the eight-hour class.  You must repeat the class every three years and can do this with the four-hour class.  The classes are held at the Benson High School Library/Media Center.  Pre-registration is necessary.  Cost is $20.00 per class (payable to Benson Public Schools).   Registration and payment are due one week prior to the class.  Register online or by calling Community Education at 320-843-4545.  The classes are produced by the MN Safety Council.

      Driver’s Education Classes – This class fulfills the mandatory 30 hours of classroom instruction.  Classroom work can be done prior to being 15 years of age but the students must be 15 years of age to take the permit test.  After passing the permit test, arrangements for Behind the Wheel will be made.  The 16-year old student may take the road test after the required six months of practice driving (which will include the six hours of Behind the Wheel training).  Fee is $300 for classroom instruction and behind the wheel.  A deposit of $105 is needed to attend the class. The next class is tentatively scheduled for August 2020.  Call Community Education at 320-843-4545 for more information or to get your name added to our contact list.   

           You will now be able to schedule an appointment online for class D knowledge tests (written permit test) at any of the 14 regional DVS exam stations.  Willmar is one of these 14 regional DVS exam stations.  The MN Department of Public Safety Driver and Vehicle Services division (DPS-DVS) is discontinuing class D knowledge tests on a first-come-first-served basis and will require appointments beginning Monday, July 13.  You will need to book appointments online at drive.mn.gov.  The appointment-scheduling tool will be available beginning Friday, July 10.  Beginning July 13, DVS exam stations will not accept walk-ins for class D knowledge tests (written permit test); an appointment will be required.

      New Program Ideas Wanted – Community Education is always looking for adults to share their talents, skills, expertise, hobbies and career experiences with students of all ages!  A teaching degree is not necessary.  Classes are flexible because they are built around the needs of the people involved.  Call Shelly at 843-4545 if you would like to teach a class or if you have an innovative idea for a class or activity.  We welcome your ideas!!

      Help Wanted – Summer Rec & Aquatics Jobs – Benson Community Ed is now accepting applications for a variety of summer positions:  baseball/softball coaches, baseball/softball umps, field maintenance, crossing guard, pool lifeguards, and swim lesson instructors.  Applicants should be highly motivated and interested in working with youth and adults.  Applications are available online or in the Community Ed office.  Application deadline: Friday, April 5.

      Lifeguarding Today – This class is for those wishing to become a lifeguard.  Must by 15 years old, be able to swim 500 yards, tread water for 1 minute without using hand and dive to 9’ and bring a diving brick to surface.  Dates to be determined.  Contact Community Ed at 320-843-4545 if you’re interested.

     Jazz-N-Pizzazz Dance Recital – Dancers of Jazz-n-Pizzazz are gearing up for this year’s dance recital – “We Got The Beat.”  There will be four performances: Saturday, April 13 (Pre-K through grade 4) – 10:30 a.m.; Saturday, April 13 - grades 5-12 will perform at 2:00 p.m., followed by an intermission and then Pre-K through grade 4 will perform at 4:00 p.m.; Saturday, April 13 (grades 5-12) – 7:00 p.m.; Sunday, April 14 (Pre-K through grade 12) – 1:30 p.m.  Performances will be held in the Senior High Gym.  All seating is general admission.

            Driver’s Education Classes – This class fulfills the mandatory 30 hours of classroom instruction.  Classroom work can be done prior to being 15 years of age but the students must be 15 years of age to take the permit test.  After passing the permit test, arrangements for Behind the Wheel will be made.  The 16-year old student may take the road test after the required six months of practice driving (which will include the six hours of Behind the Wheel training).  Call Community Education at 320-843-4545 to register.  The next session of classroom instruction will be June 2019.  Roger Lindahl is the instructor.  Fee is $275 for classroom instruction and behind the wheel.  A deposit of $95 will be needed to attend the class. 

 

             

      Written drivers’ tests have resumed in Benson.  They will be given on the 2ndThursday of each month.  For more information, contact the MN Driver’s License Exam Station in Willmar, 320-231-1735.
