Benson School District

Here is the Benson Schools COVID-19 update for this week.

The Swift County number from MDH went down to 34.00 (keep in mind this is a two week delay and MDE and MDH has directed schools to use more localized data than the county case numbers). In Swift County there were 78 active COVID cases. Most of the cases fall into the 20-50 age group. Last week four Benson School students tested positive. Most of the positive student cases were a result of exposure outside of school. So far zero staff in K-12 have tested positive for COVID-19. There is no evidence from our school nurses or Countryside Public Health that there is any spread within the school. That is a positive piece of data and is a direct reflection on the great things that our students and staff are doing –  wearing masks, maintaining strict social distances, doing temp checks and health screenings before coming to school, and staying home when you are sick. As a result of strict social distancing, there have been few close contacts.

The COVID numbers in the state and the area are growing at alarming rates. Hopefully we can keep the virus out of our schools. However, I want you to know that we need to be prepared to move into a full hybrid or distance learning model should COVID numbers dictate that change. I don’t mean to alarm anyone, and I want to be clear that there is no plan to change the In-Person Learning Model at this time, but with the state positive case number soaring over 5,000 we simply need to have plans in place. Please have a plan at home should students be home a couple days a week or more.

Last Friday, November 6th Governor Walz held a call with school leaders. During the call the Governor was asked if he plans to shut down schools given the rising COVID numbers. His answer was, “No, I don’t have plans to shut down schools at this time.”

Students learn best in school with their teachers and we will do everything we can to continue to safely have students in school. In addition, having students in school allows parents to go to work which keeps our local businesses running and communities strong.

Benson Schools will continue with In-Person Learning Models both at NS and BHS with strict social distancing.

Thank you to everyone for your support of Benson Schools, our students and staff. It is greatly appreciated!

In addition, the Governor's Safe Learning Plan requires districts to offer a choice distance learning plan. Included in the plan are requirements for choice distance learning, should a family choose that option.  Please notice that the choice distance learning requirements are not the same as distance learning last spring. Families who opt for choice distance learning will need to fill out a form. Here is the link to the choice distance learning form:
