     Benson Community Education Email Updates – Be the first to know “what’s what” in Benson Community Education.  Sign up to receive a monthly email with updates of programs, events and classes being offered through Benson Schools and Benson Community Education!  We will be cutting back to 3 newsletter issues each year (spring/summer, fall and winter).      2019 Summer League Travel Baseball – Benson boys in current grades 3-6 will be playing in a traveling Summer League.  Teams will be split by grade level.  Schedules are still to be finalized, but plan for games to be played at home as well as at neighboring districts such as KMS, Willmar, New London, etc.  Transportation to these games will be on your own.  League play usually starts the first part of June.  A complete schedule will be handed out once practices start.  Practices will be scheduled by the team coach(es).  Because we feel it is important for the boys to have additional practice and skill building opportunities, registration for the summer morning baseball program is automatically included in your fee.  Summer morning ball will begin on June 3rd and takes place on Monday-Thursday at the ball fields.  Time and date details will be in the summer Community Ed newsletter going out mid to late April.  Cost is $55 which includes registration in the morning baseball summer program.   Registration forms were sent home with the students.  Registration and payment deadline is Friday, April 26, 2019.  Register online or by calling Benson Community Education at 320-843-4545.

      Lifeguarding Today – This American Red Cross class is for those wishing to become a certified lifeguard.  CPR-PR and First Aid Training is included in the course of instruction  Students must be 15 years old on or before the final day of the course, swim 500 yards using the front crawl or breaststroke, tread water for 1 minute without using hand and dive to 9’ and bring a diving brick to surface.  Classes will be held May 22, 23, 28 and 29 from 5:00–10:00 p.m.  The length of the class is approximately 24-25 hours.  Registration deadline is May 10.  Class limit is 6.  The cost is $160 which includes pocket mask and a download book.  There is an additional cost to purchase a printed book.  Contact Community Ed at 320-843-4545 if you have questions or to register.  You may also register on-line.

      Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Training – Those who earn their WSI certificate will be able to teach Red Cross swimming lessons.  Must be 16 years old by the last day of class.  Must successfully complete the pre-course online session consisting of swimming skills and knowledge and attend all classes.  Class limit is 8.  Cost is $200 which includes class and book.  An additional $35 on-line fee will need to be paid to the American Red Cross.  Deadline to register is May 24.  This will allow the participants adequate time to pick up books and complete assignments prior to the first day of class.  Classes will be held on June 1 and 2 from 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and June 4 and 5 from 5:00-10:00 p.m.  Call Benson Community Education at 320-843-4545 if you have questions or to register.  You may also register on-line.

      First Aid and CPR – We are partnering with the Swift County-Benson Health Services for Heartsaver CPR/AED/First Aid.  This is a classroom, video-based, instructor led course that teaches students critical skills needed to respond to and manage a first aid, choking or sudden cardiac arrest emergency.  Upon successful course completion, you will receive an American Heart Association course completion card that is valid for 2 years.  The next course is tentatively scheduled for June 2019.  Call Benson Community Education at 320-843-4545 to register.

     Mama Mia @ Chanhassen Dinner Theatre, Saturday, September 28 – One mom. One daughter. Three possible dads. And a trip down the aisle you'll never forget!  ABBA's hits tell the hilarious story of a young woman's search for her birth father. This sunny and funny tale unfolds on a Greek island paradise. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter's quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother's past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago.  The story-telling magic of ABBA's timeless songs propels this enchanting tale of love, laughter and friendship, creating an unforgettable show.                                                                                     * * * * *                                                                                                                  Adult Basic Education (ABE/GED/ESL) – Learning is lifelong.  Do you want free help to improve your reading skills, writing skills, spelling and/or math skills?  Do you want free help to study for the GED, develop good employment skills, and/or learn English as a Second Language?  The classes are held on Monday nights from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., Benson Senior High classroom #323 (use entrance #2).  The instructor is Pam Hamann.  No registration is needed!  Drop-ins are welcome!  All programs are FREE!  Last class for this school year is May 20th.  For more information or if you have questions, call Benson Community Education at 320-843-4545.

      Discovery Kids –Discovery Kids offers extended learning care from 5:30 am-6:30 pm Monday through Friday for children ages 6 weeks through 6th grade.  We are located on the ground level and 1st floor of Benson Elementary (old JH building). Use entrance #33.  Infants, toddler, pre-school and school-age kids will all be in separate rooms.  Preschool and school-aged children will be bussed by Benson Public Schools to and from Northside Elementary and to Summer Rec activities.  A staff member will drive, or will accompany, students on the bus.  Discovery Kids will provide one meal and two snacks for a child who is in attendance at the time of serving.  We are accepting registrations for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children.  The registration form and handbook are available on the school website.  More information can be found on the Discovery Kids website: discoverykidsbenson.com.  Discovery Kids direct dial phone number is 842-2723.

      Senior Defensive Driving Classes – Defensive Driving classes are offered to people 55 years of age and over to review and discuss courteous driving and the rules of the road.  If you are 55 years of age and older, you receive 10% off your auto insurance for three years, after completing the eight-hour class.  You must repeat the class every three years and can do this with the four-hour class.  The classes are held at the Benson High School Library.  Pre-registration is necessary.  Cost is $17.00 per class (payable to Benson Public Schools).   Registration and payment are due one week prior to the class.  Register online or by calling Community Education at 320-843-4545.  The classes are produced by the MN Safety Council.

        Driver’s Education Classes – This class fulfills the mandatory 30 hours of classroom instruction.  Classroom work can be done prior to being 15 years of age but the students must be 15 years of age to take the permit test.  After passing the permit test, arrangements for Behind the Wheel will be made.  The 16-year old student may take the road test after the required six months of practice driving (which will include the six hours of Behind the Wheel training).  Call Community Education at 320-843-4545 to register.  The next session of classroom instruction runs from May 29 – June 12, 2019.  Roger Lindahl is the instructor.  Fee is $275 for classroom instruction and behind the wheel.  A deposit of $95 will be needed to attend the class. 

           Written drivers’ tests have resumed in Benson.  They will be given on the 2nd Thursday of each month.  For more information, contact the MN Driver’s License Exam Station in Willmar, 320-231-1735.

     Jazz-N-Pizzazz Dance Recital – Dancers of Jazz-n-Pizzazz are gearing up for this year’s dance recital – “We Got The Beat.”  There will be four performances: Saturday, April 13 (Pre-K through grade 4) – 10:30 a.m.; Saturday, April 13 - grades 5-12 will perform at 2:00 p.m., followed by an intermission and then Pre-K through grade 4 will perform at 4:00 p.m.; Saturday, April 13 (grades 5-12) – 7:00 p.m.; Sunday, April 14 (Pre-K through grade 12) – 1:30 p.m.  Performances will be held in the Senior High Gym.  All seating is general admission.

      Jazz-n-Pizzazz Ticket Sales –Advance sale tickets will be available at the Benson Community Education Office (located in the senior high school) starting Monday, April 1 during office hours (8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.)  Ticket prices are $5.00.  Tickets are required for everyone attending the performances.
